The Rise of Controversial Content on Jubilee

In recent years, the YouTube channel Jubilee has gained a massive following, with over 10.2 million subscribers. Known for its "find the mole" and "middle ground" videos, the platform has traditionally offered content that sparks debate. However, in the past year, Jubilee has taken a more controversial turn, raising concerns about the type of content it is promoting.

On July 20, Jubilee released a video titled “1 Progressive vs. 20 Far-Right Conservatives (ft. Mehdi Hasan).” This video quickly became one of the most controversial in the channel's history. The clips from this video began circulating on TikTok, leading to widespread discussions about the potential influence of such content on public discourse.

The video starts with a man openly identifying as a fascist, which is met with applause from others in the group. Another participant claims that “whites are Native American,” while Mehdi Hasan, the lone progressive voice, points out his immigrant background. In response, someone shouts, “get the hell out.” These exchanges set the tone for the rest of the nearly two-hour video, filled with similar extreme views.

This isn't the first time Jubilee has faced criticism for its content choices. Many have pointed out the channel's tendency to feature individuals with ideas ranging from questionable to outright racist, sexist, and xenophobic. This latest video exemplifies how the brand has evolved into something more sinister than before.

Critics on social media are not only questioning why Jubilee would publish such content but also suggesting that the media brand contributes to the normalization of these dangerous ideas. I agree with this sentiment.

Democracies rely on open debate and discussion, so the idea of presenting different viewpoints might seem beneficial. However, when Jubilee provides a platform for harmful ideologies, it undermines the very purpose of meaningful dialogue. The goal of lively debate seems to have been lost at Jubilee headquarters. What was once an opportunity for connection has turned into a strategy for engagement, creating content designed to provoke and go viral.

Debate requires respect for the opposing side. When one party refuses to acknowledge the other’s right to exist or believes themselves superior, genuine discussion becomes impossible.

Moreover, when incorrect or dangerous statements are shared on mainstream platforms without fact-checking or challenge, those ideas become normalized. Lies can be mistaken for truth, and hate speech may be seen as just another form of expression.

This pattern has been evident in the rise of Donald Trump. As media outlets continued to promote his rhetoric, what he said became increasingly normalized, even when it involved misinformation and hate. His election in 2016 and re-election in 2024 demonstrated that being politically correct or accurate no longer matters. People could openly admit to assault and call for the arrest of opponents and still gain power.

Now, the U.S. finds itself in a situation where individuals feel comfortable expressing pro-fascist sentiments.

Supporters of Jubilee argue that by sharing content like the July 20 video, the platform is simply revealing what already exists. However, many, including myself, believe that Jubilee is encouraging people and groups to express their rhetoric more boldly. While debate and free speech are essential, the current trend in mainstream media is not just differing opinions — it's extremism that is being presented as normal. I refuse to accept this, and companies like Jubilee should strive for better.
