Councilwoman Faces DWI Charges and Legal Challenges

Councilwoman Ivalis Meza Gonzalez, who recently won a seat on the North Side of San Antonio, is now facing legal troubles after being charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI). The incident occurred just over a month after her June 7 election victory. Meza Gonzalez, 43, was arrested on Thursday and released from Bexar County jail early Friday afternoon after posting a $1,000 bond.

Meza Gonzalez has hired two well-known attorneys, David Christian and Thom Nisbet, who previously represented Councilman Marc Whyte in his 2023 DWI case. These same lawyers also defended Clayton Perry, Whyte’s predecessor, following a 2022 incident where Perry was involved in a drunk driving accident.

The recent charges against Meza Gonzalez came after she was pulled over by San Antonio police for driving at a slower speed than other vehicles and drifting between lanes on Interstate 10 West near Hildebrand Avenue just after 11 p.m. on Thursday. According to an arrest affidavit, she exhibited signs of intoxication, including slurred speech, glassy eyes, and a strong odor of alcohol. She was described as staggering after taking a field sobriety test, despite denying any alcohol consumption.

Meza Gonzalez claimed she was coming from the Centre Club, a members-only dining establishment located on the 30th floor of the Weston Centre in downtown San Antonio. The club had promoted a cocktail class and tasting event on the night of the arrest, though it remains unclear if she attended.

Once in custody, Meza Gonzalez refused to provide a breath or blood sample. A judge later ordered her to undergo a blood alcohol test. However, neither Meza Gonzalez, her attorneys, nor the Centre Club have responded to requests for comment.

Previous Cases Involving Her Legal Team

David Christian and Thom Nisbet have a history of representing individuals charged with DWI. In addition to defending Whyte and Perry, they also worked on the case of KSAT reporter John Paul Barajas, who was charged with DWI in 2023 after having a blood-alcohol content nearly twice the legal limit. Barajas received one year of probation.

DWI is classified as a Class B misdemeanor, which can result in up to 180 days in jail. While the specific penalties for Meza Gonzalez’s case are still pending, her situation has drawn attention due to her position as a city council member.

Past Consequences for Similar Offenses

In January 2024, former Mayor Ron Nirenberg and the City Council censured Marc Whyte after his DWI arrest. A censure is a symbolic measure without concrete penalties but serves as a public statement of disapproval. Nirenberg also suspended Whyte from serving on City Council committees for three months, limiting his influence on city policy.

Similarly, Clayton Perry faced consequences after his 2022 DWI incident. A vote of no confidence was cast against him, and he was stripped of his committee assignments for the remainder of his term. Perry took a two-month leave of absence and later completed a 45-day residential alcohol-addiction treatment program.

Political Implications

Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones has not commented on Meza Gonzalez’s arrest or potential disciplinary actions. This silence contrasts with previous responses to similar incidents involving other council members. The political ramifications of Meza Gonzalez’s case remain uncertain, but it could spark discussions about accountability and the responsibilities of elected officials.

As the legal process unfolds, the community will be watching closely to see how this case impacts the city's leadership and public trust. The involvement of high-profile attorneys and the history of similar cases add layers of complexity to Meza Gonzalez’s situation. Whether this leads to significant consequences or a swift resolution remains to be seen.
