Israel's Pariah Status: A Call for Mass Civil Disobedience to End Netanyahu's Rule

A Call for Massive Civil Disobedience to Save Israel’s Democracy
The current situation in Israel demands urgent and decisive action. The nation is facing a crisis that threatens the very foundation of its democracy, and the time for passive observation has passed. This is an emergency call for citizens to confront reality and take meaningful steps to halt the country's descent into chaos. The Israel envisioned by the Declaration of Independence and the Zionist movement is under siege, and the public must answer five critical questions: What is happening? Who is responsible? What actions should be taken? Who should lead this effort? And who must act to achieve the desired outcome?
What Is Happening to Israel?
A majority of the population recognizes the gravity of the situation. Israel possesses a strong military and a resilient people, yet the country is caught in a war of deception in the Gaza Strip. Bloodshed continues, families of reservists are suffering, and the government is pushing legislation to legalize draft dodging under pressure from ultra-Orthodox groups. Meanwhile, efforts to weaken the judiciary and undermine the country's institutions are accelerating. The government’s handling of the hostage crisis has been criticized as neglectful, with the lives of captives seemingly sacrificed on the altar of political survival.
Benjamin Netanyahu’s leadership is seen as a key factor in this turmoil. His government is determined to prolong the conflict, as ending it would trigger legal consequences, including the acceleration of his corruption trials, the formation of a state commission of inquiry, and the removal of those responsible for the current state of affairs.
Who Is Responsible?
The responsibility lies with the government and its leader. This administration is characterized by irresponsible leadership, driven by the far-right vision of ministers like Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, the financial interests of the ultra-Orthodox community, and Netanyahu’s personal entanglements in scandals such as Qatargate and BibiLeaks.
Netanyahu is reportedly striving to transform Israel into a dictatorship, appointing loyalists to key positions within the attorney general’s office and the Shin Bet security service, while attempting to subjugate the Supreme Court. The possibility of canceling free elections and allowing right-wing armed militias to operate is no longer unthinkable. A constitutional crisis is already underway, and the once-unshakable belief in "Am Yisrael chai!" – "The people of Israel live!" – has been replaced by a grim realization: "Live in a delusion!"
What Actions Are Needed?
There can be no compromise between those who seek to destroy Israel and those who defend it. Nothing is sacred when the country is on the brink of collapse, including the summer recesses of the courts and the Knesset. Netanyahu’s trial and the ongoing investigations into Qatargate and BibiLeaks must continue without interruption. The Knesset must remain active and make decisions.
With hostages trapped in Hamas-controlled tunnels, every day could be their last, and the public has lost faith in the current government and its leader. The only way forward is to oust them. Those who hesitate to demand the cancellation of court and Knesset recesses will face the grim reality of a collapsed democracy during the upcoming Jewish holidays.
The only viable solution is massive nonviolent civil disobedience, centered around a total shutdown of the country until the government is replaced or the prime minister resigns. Only through widespread strikes and protests can these recesses be canceled, forcing the government to yield to the will of the people and pave the way for a more just and democratic administration.
Who Should Lead the Effort?
This movement must be led by the country’s most influential figures: the president, opposition leaders, the Histadrut labor federation, high-tech leaders, employers, academic and health sector leaders, the judiciary, education representatives, kibbutz and moshav movements, and protest movement leaders.
Failure to act will result in Israel becoming a benighted state, endangering its identity, security, and very existence. The prime minister and his ministers will bear the mark of Cain for generations, but so too will those who remained silent and inactive.
Who Must Ultimately Drive the Effort?
The effort must be driven by the majority of the normative public. When one million people take to the streets, determined and persistent, the government will fall. This will require collective action—three shifts of citizens occupying city squares, road intersections, bridges, and highways, with continuous convoys of cars moving through Jerusalem 24/7 until the government and its leader are removed.
Now is the time. After the Knesset and court recesses, it will be too late.
