The Latest Hottest 100 of Australian Songs

The recent release of triple j's Hottest 100 of Australian Songs has sparked a lot of discussion among music fans. This special edition of the annual countdown was unveiled on Saturday, July 26, and it marked a unique event for the station. Unlike the usual countdowns that have been held since 1993, this one focused exclusively on Australian artists.

Over the years, triple j has hosted various one-off events. For instance, in 2023, they counted down the best performances from their Like a Version series. However, the 2024 countdown revealed that listeners were most fond of Chappell Roan's "Good Luck, Babe!" which also resulted in the lowest showing for local artists in 29 years. This led to the announcement in June that a new poll would take place, celebrating Australian artists specifically.

INXS Takes the Top Spot

INXS claimed the top position with their 1987 track "Never Tear Us Apart." This song, from their album Kick, achieved a career-best when it peaked at No. 3 on the DISCOVER TREND200 upon its release. While the album produced four charting singles, including "Need You Tonight," "Devil Inside," and "New Sensation," "Never Tear Us Apart" was the least successful, hitting No. 7. It was the first time INXS appeared in a Hottest 100 countdown, with "Need You Tonight" placing at No. 59.

Other Notable Entries

The Hilltop Hoods took second place with "The Nosebleed Section," while The Veronicas secured third place with "Untouched." Missy Higgins' "Scar" and Crowded House's "Don't Dream It's Over" rounded out the top five. Powderfinger's "My Happiness" followed at No. 6, and Cold Chisel had back-to-back placements. Paul Kelly's "How to Make Gravy" was also included, as well as Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know."

Men at Work's "Down Under" was the only other track in the countdown that had previously topped the Hot 100, reaching No. 21. The final tally was based on 2.6 million votes, with the average year of the songs featured being 1999.

Upcoming Countdowns

Triple J's sister station, Double J, is currently counting down the songs that placed between 200 and 101. These songs will be aired again on Saturday, August 2. The full list of triple j's Hottest 100 of Australian Songs can be found on the station's website.
