A Nostalgic Tune Reappears in an Unexpected Way

A familiar melody from the past has made a surprising return, bringing back memories for fans of General Hospital. Kin Shriner, who portrayed Scotty Baldwin on the long-running soap opera, found himself in an unusual situation when a song from the show’s history played during a phone call. The moment was captured and shared on Instagram, sparking a wave of reactions from fans and fellow cast members.

In a video posted on Monday, July 21, Shriner can be heard speaking with SAG (Screen Actors Guild) while the call was on hold. The tune that played during the wait was none other than “Rise” by Herb Alpert, a song famously associated with one of the most controversial moments in General Hospital history—the rape scene involving Luke (played by Anthony Geary) and Laura (played by Genie Francis).

Shriner captioned the post with, “For those who get the joke!!!” referencing the infamous TV moment that still lingers in the minds of many fans. The scene, which took place in a disco during a 1979 episode, marked the beginning of a complicated relationship between Luke and Laura, ultimately leading to a love triangle that captivated viewers for years.

At the time of the incident, Laura was married to Shriner’s character, Scotty Baldwin. The storyline created tension among the characters, and eventually, Laura divorced Scotty and married Luke in 1981. Despite being one of the most popular couples in soap opera history, the initial portrayal of their relationship remains a point of contention among fans and critics alike.

Fans of General Hospital quickly recognized the song in Shriner’s post, with many sharing their thoughts in the comments section. One user wrote, “Trigger song I can see the scene as we speak!” while another added, “I love that song Kin but I always hated that they used it for the GH scene.” Another fan commented, “I’ll always think of that horrible scene in the campus disco when I hear this song,” while another shared, “I couldn’t listen to that song for years later without hearing Laura yelling, ‘No, Luke!’”

Several of Shriner’s followers also expressed hope that Scotty Baldwin might return to the show in the future. Since his last appearance in August 2024, fans have been eager to see the character make a comeback. One comment read, “Haven’t heard RISE in yrs.. Miss you, Kin..time to bring Scott home,” while another wrote, “I hope you come back to GH! Your fans miss you!!! Scotty was a main piece of GH history past, present and future!”

Genie Francis, who played Laura, has spoken out about the impact of the scene in the past. During a 2023 ABC Television Critics Association press conference panel, she expressed her feelings about the storyline, stating that she no longer felt the need to “defend” it. “As a young kid, at 17, I was told to play rape, and I played it,” she said, per Entertainment Weekly. “I didn’t even know what it was. But, at 17, you follow the rules, and you do as you are told, and you aim to please.”

She continued, “I think that the story was inappropriate, I don’t condone it, and it’s been a burden that I’ve had to carry to try to justify that story, and so I’m not doing that anymore. When a woman says ‘No,’ she should be listened to, and if you replay that scene, you don’t have Laura just saying ‘No,’ you have her screaming ‘No.’”
