A Night of Firsts for the Texas Rangers

In a memorable night for the Texas Rangers, several players made significant milestones in their Major League Baseball (MLB) careers. Cody Freeman and Michael Helman each had their first big league hits on consecutive pitches, marking an unusual and exciting moment in the team's history.

The game against the Athletics ended with a 7-2 victory for the Rangers. Freeman, who had just made his MLB debut as a pinch-runner, lined a tiebreaking RBI double into the right-center gap during the fifth inning. This was his first big league hit. Just one pitch later, Helman, the leadoff hitter, launched a three-run home run, making it his first career homer. The sequence of events left the crowd buzzing and the players excited.

Helman shared his thoughts on the moment, saying, “That was cool that Cody got his first hit and an RBI right before that, and then that happened. That was pretty special.” Freeman, on the other hand, expressed his surprise at the outcome: “It’s just one of those moments where, just I hit the ball and I didn’t know what happened from contact to second base.”

Freeman’s first career RBI brought the score to 2-1, and Helman followed up by driving in his first runs. This marked only the second time in nearly five years that a player had his first MLB hit in the same inning a teammate had his first career homer. The last occurrence was on September 18, 2020, when Mickey Moniak and Rafael Marchan achieved the same feat for the Philadelphia Phillies.

Manager Bruce Bochy praised the duo, stating, “Those guys won that game for us.” Meanwhile, the Rangers also announced they had reached an agreement with California high school shortstop Gavin Fien, their first-round pick in the MLB amateur draft eight nights earlier.

Josh Jung’s Impact

Josh Jung, who was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock along with Helman earlier in the day, contributed significantly to the win. He homered leading off the third inning, giving the Rangers a 1-0 lead. Jung also walked before scoring on Helman’s home run and later added another run with a single in the seventh inning.

Jung described the day as “a crazy day” and noted how the results helped build his confidence. He and Helman were still in Las Vegas on Monday morning when they received the news that they would rejoin the Rangers. After a delayed flight, baggage claim, and a “little police escort” in rush-hour traffic, they arrived at the ballpark about half an hour before the first pitch. Both players managed to hit home runs despite not taking batting practice.

Bochy remarked on the unconventional approach, saying, “It's old-school way, like playing American Legion ball. Just go out there and play.” Helman added a fourth RBI with a safety squeeze bunt in the seventh inning, becoming the first Texas player to have a homer and an RBI sacrifice bunt in a game since Bob Brower on July 11, 1987.

Freeman’s Journey

Freeman, a fourth-round pick by the Rangers in 2019, made his MLB debut as a pinch-runner Friday night, scoring first on Corey Seager's two-run double in the eighth inning of a 2-0 win over Detroit. After going 0 for 3 in his first big league start Sunday night, he batted ninth as the designated hitter.

His first big league hit came off a fellow rookie, and Freeman felt more relaxed than the previous day. “You know, I was definitely amped up, heart rate was pounding. That was the benefit of ESPN Sunday night facing the best pitcher in the game. Just can't get higher than that, and then it felt way more relaxed today.”

Freeman raised his arms as soon as Helman connected on the next pitch, then trotted home in front of him. Helman, who made his big league debut in nine games for Minnesota last season, emphasized the importance of the team effort. “I was just trying to do my job, and because the guys before me did theirs, I felt like I needed to get something in the air. And it happened to work out better than I expected.”
