A Dramatic Confrontation in a Michigan Walmart Parking Lot

A shocking video that has circulated widely on social media captures the tense moment when a man accused of stabbing 11 people inside a Michigan Walmart was taken into custody by brave bystanders. The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Bradford Gille from Afton, is expected to face serious charges, including one count of terrorism and 11 counts of assault with intent to murder. Fortunately, all of his victims are expected to survive, according to a spokesperson for Munson Healthcare.

In the video, an armed bystander can be seen shouting at the attacker to drop his weapon—a 3 and 1/2 inch folding knife—while others surround him and use shopping carts to block his escape. At one point, the camera pans back toward the Walmart entrance, where a blurred image shows a victim lying injured on the pavement, with other witnesses rushing to help.

Bystanders Step In During the Chaos

Two shoppers, Matt Kolakowski and his brother-in-law Chris O'Brien, were among those who intervened during the incident. They were in Traverse City for a family vacation when they heard a store employee shout, “He’s got a knife.” Kolakowski, a former Marine who served in Iraq nearly 20 years ago, described the scene as chaotic. As the attacker moved through the store, stabbing several people near the checkout, panic spread among the shoppers.

Kolakowski and O'Brien pursued the suspect, with Kolakowski grabbing an empty shopping cart. Along the way, they witnessed the attacker stab a man in the shoulder and an elderly woman in the back. According to Kolakowski, the suspect was screaming about being a soldier and claiming that everyone in the Walmart were bad people.

Once they reached the parking lot, another bystander, who later turned out to be a fellow Marine, drew a handgun on the attacker. Kolakowski said the Marine had just come from the shooting range and had forgotten to remove his pistol from his hip. This unexpected action led the attacker to drop his knife, allowing Kolakowski to subdue him until law enforcement arrived.

A Heroic Effort to Save Lives

Kolakowski remained on top of the suspect until a deputy arrived and took control. He then helped the deputy arrest the suspect and assisted police officers in treating the wounded by applying tourniquets to the victims. Kolakowski described the aftermath as a scene of mass panic, with ambulances, sirens, and blood everywhere. He noted that people were being loaded onto carts and transported to the ambulances.

According to Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea, Gille has a history of assaultive incidents and controlled substance violations. However, the motive behind the attack remains unclear. Catherine Dewey, a spokesperson for Munson Healthcare, reported that as of 3 p.m. on Sunday, two of the 11 victims were still in serious condition, while eight others were in fair condition and one had been treated and released.

A Community Responds in Crisis

The bravery of the bystanders, especially Kolakowski and the other Marine, played a crucial role in preventing further harm. Their quick thinking and willingness to act under pressure highlight the importance of community involvement in times of crisis. The incident serves as a reminder of how ordinary people can make a significant difference in extraordinary circumstances.
