Doctor Pleads Guilty in Matthew Perry's Death for Supplying Ketamine

The Role of Dr. Salvador Plasencia in Matthew Perry's Death
Dr. Salvador Plasencia, a physician who was charged alongside four others for his involvement in the death of actor Matthew Perry, has pleaded guilty in court. On Wednesday, July 23, he admitted to four counts of illegally distributing the prescription anesthetic ketamine. This plea comes with the potential for up to 40 years in prison. In June, Plasencia agreed to plead guilty to his role in the substance abuse that led to Perry’s tragic death in 2023.
Known as "Dr. P," Plasencia signed a plea agreement on June 13, which was drafted by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California. This agreement was filed in court on June 16 and obtained by USA TODAY. The case highlights the growing concerns around the use and distribution of ketamine, a short-acting anesthetic with hallucinogenic properties. While it is sometimes prescribed to treat depression and anxiety, it is also frequently abused by recreational users.
In a statement released to USA TODAY on July 22, Plasencia's legal team expressed their client's deep remorse for the treatment decisions made while providing ketamine to Matthew Perry. The statement emphasized that Plasencia is fully accepting responsibility by pleading guilty to drug distribution and intends to voluntarily surrender his medical license. He acknowledges his failure to protect Perry, who was particularly vulnerable due to his addiction.
Although Dr. Plasencia was not treating Perry at the time of his death, he hopes his case serves as a warning to other medical professionals. He aims to encourage stricter oversight and clear protocols for the rapidly expanding at-home ketamine industry to prevent future tragedies.
Legal Consequences and Plea Agreement Details
As part of the plea deal, Plasencia acknowledges that he "knowingly distributed ketamine" to Perry before his 2023 death. He also admits to behaving in a manner "outside the scope of professional practice," with the drug distribution lacking "a legitimate medical purpose." In addition to facing prison time, other conditions of his sentence could include a three-year period of supervised release, a fine of $2 million (or alternatively, "twice the gross gain or gross loss resulting from the offenses"), and a mandatory special assessment of $400.
Plasencia was charged in August 2024 alongside Jasveen Sangha, who was previously referred to as "The Ketamine Queen" of North Hollywood. Together, they faced 18 criminal counts for allegedly distributing ketamine to Perry during the final weeks of the actor’s life.
Matthew Perry, best known for his role as the wisecracking Chandler Bing on "Friends," died in October 2023 at the age of 54 after being found dead in a jacuzzi at his Los Angeles home. His death, which involved drugs, prompted a sweeping investigation in May 2024 by several U.S. agencies, including the Los Angeles Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration.
An autopsy report released in December 2023 revealed that Perry's death was an accident, with the cause being "the acute effects of ketamine." Contributing factors included drowning, coronary artery disease, and the effects of buprenorphine.
Awareness and Support for Substance Abuse

The case of Dr. Plasencia and Matthew Perry underscores the need for increased awareness and regulation around the use of substances like ketamine. As the at-home ketamine industry continues to grow, it is crucial for medical professionals and regulatory bodies to establish clear guidelines to ensure patient safety and prevent similar incidents in the future.
