Lugo has consistently posted mid-3.00s or lower ERAs over the past five seasons, despite having below-average fastball velocity and good-not-great strikeout rates. His ability to strand runners and limit hard contact is partly due to his diverse pitch repertoire, which includes nine different types of pitches. With a Nathan Eovaldi-type contract looming in free agency, the Royals may be inclined to move Lugo if Cole Ragans’s shoulder doesn’t improve.

The Cubs were identified as one of the best fits for Lugo, given that he is on an expiring contract, which could make the deal more attractive from a cost perspective. Lugo is having another impressive season, earning All-Star honors in 2024. He has made 18 starts this season, posting a 2.94 ERA over 107 innings with 93 strikeouts. In 2024, he finished with a 3.00 ERA over 206.2 innings.
