Blood-Curdling Screams and a Crazed Look: Witnesses Recall Michigan Walmart Attack

A Day of Chaos and Courage at a Local Walmart
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — On what seemed like an ordinary Saturday, Julia Martell was shopping with a friend at her local Walmart when she heard screams echoing through the store. At first, she assumed it was just a minor altercation in another aisle. But as she turned the corner, she saw a man running down an aisle, holding a knife. The scene that followed left many people shaken and changed the course of their lives.
Eleven individuals, ranging in age from 29 to 84, were injured in a stabbing incident at the Traverse City Walmart on Saturday. A suspect, identified as Bradford James Gille, 42, was quickly subdued by other shoppers and taken into custody when a deputy arrived. Authorities confirmed that Gille acted alone and that the attack appeared to be random without any specific targets.
Martell, 32, described the moment she encountered the suspect. "He barreled past someone else nearby and 'angled toward me,' and that's when I booked it down the aisle." She said the man looked "crazed" and focused on reaching the store’s exit. Though she didn’t think she was a target, she was relieved she managed to get out of the way in time.
"I'm still sitting and grappling with the weight of realizing that it was kind of a life or death moment," Martell said. She expressed how surreal it felt to have been there during the event, especially after seeing the news coverage. "I could have easily been next."
As she made her way out of the store, Martell passed at least two men who had been stabbed. One was elderly and complaining about his heart, while the other joked about needing a Band-Aid. Despite the chaos, there were moments of humanity amid the fear.
Quick Thinking and Community Action
Michael Miller, 34, along with his fiancée, Julia Ling, 27, and four of their children, were also in the store when they heard what they described as blood-curdling screams. Ling grabbed the young girls and pulled them behind a bread rack, anything to block the attacker from them. Meanwhile, Miller ran toward the action to help.
Ling witnessed the suspect stab one victim in the produce section and then another by the self-checkout. As the attacker ran toward her and her children, she said, "He lunged at us." Then, he lunged at Miller, and the group working together pushed him out the door.
The group outside the store managed to get the suspect to the ground, and Miller called 911. Officers arrived within minutes, and Miller helped the first responders locate all the injured victims.
Miller emphasized that everyone involved reacted at the same time and in the same way. "I think we all saw each other. We all noticed each other and saw what was going on," he said. "Definitely something that I think everybody was kind of in on together."
Both Miller and Ling described the day as a "wake-up call" and expressed concerns about taking their kids on errands, especially when one of them has to go alone. Ling mentioned she’s already thinking about making plans to go when Miller is home from work.
Despite the trauma, both expressed faith in their community after so many bystanders worked together to stop the violence. Miller kept saying to Ling after the fact, "I only did what anybody should have done." Ling added, "It should be that way."
Aftermath and Ongoing Investigations
Michigan prosecutors are seeking a terrorism charge against Gille, in addition to 11 counts of assault with intent to murder, one for each stabbing victim. All of the victims received care at Munson Medical Center, where all but one remain hospitalized. According to a spokesperson for Munson Healthcare, Catherine Dewey, eight of the victims are in fair condition and two are in serious condition. All are expected to survive.
The incident has left the Traverse City community in shock, but also reminded many of the power of quick thinking and collective action in times of crisis. While the scars of the event will linger, the courage of those who intervened offers a glimmer of hope and resilience.
