Bethesda Addresses the Future of Starfield

Bethesda has finally spoken about the future of its highly anticipated game, Starfield, and confirmed that it is still actively working on updates for the title. The studio emphasized that more information about upcoming content will be shared in the coming months, offering a glimmer of hope to fans who have been waiting for news.

The Starfield community has long expressed frustration with the lack of communication from Bethesda regarding the game’s future. This sentiment reached a peak when the studio did not appear at June’s Xbox Games Showcase, leaving many players feeling ignored. At the event, other titles like The Elder Scrolls Online and Fallout 76 received attention, but Starfield was completely absent. No DLC, no expansion, and no announcement about a PlayStation 5 release—just silence.

In response to these concerns, Bethesda released a brief statement on Steam, which, while vague, acknowledged the game’s future and hinted at more content being developed. The message came alongside Starfield Update 1.15.222, which is currently in beta form. While the patch notes are minimal, they include general improvements and stability fixes, showing that the development team is still engaged with the game.

Fans are now hoping that this update signals the arrival of the much-anticipated second expansion for Starfield. There is also speculation that the game may eventually make the jump to PlayStation 5, similar to how Forza Horizon 5 expanded its platform reach.

A Mixed Reception and Ongoing Challenges

Starfield made its debut in September 2023 as Bethesda’s first new intellectual property in 25 years. However, it did not receive the same level of acclaim as previous titles in the Fallout and The Elder Scrolls franchises. The Shattered Space expansion, released a year later in September 2024, has a “mostly negative” rating on Steam, reflecting player dissatisfaction.

Despite this, the game managed to attract 15 million players. Still, questions remain about whether Bethesda will continue supporting the title or shift focus to its other franchises. In June 2024, the studio reaffirmed its commitment to Starfield, confirming that at least one more story expansion would follow Shattered Space. During an interview with YouTube channel MrMattyPlays, Todd Howard, head of Bethesda Game Studios, mentioned the possibility of annual story expansions for “hopefully a very long time.”

However, Bethesda has faced significant challenges in recent months. The company was heavily impacted by Microsoft’s latest round of layoffs, which included cuts to its London office and ZeniMax Online Studios. An unannounced MMORPG was canceled, and a veteran studio head stepped down, raising further concerns about the future of some projects.

What’s in the Latest Update?

The latest patch, Starfield Update 1.15.222, includes several minor improvements and fixes. These include:

  • Minor improvements to formatting and display in Creations menus.
  • Fixes for an issue that could cause Extreme Temperature gear to appear incorrectly.
  • Enhancements to sorting in the Missions Menu.
  • General crash and stability fixes.

This update is currently available in Steam Beta. To opt in, users can follow these steps:

  1. Open your Steam Library and navigate to Starfield.
  2. Right-click on Starfield and select "Properties."
  3. In the new properties pop-up window, select "Betas."
  4. From the beta drop-down menu, choose "[beta]."
  5. Wait for the app to download the new build and launch.

As the gaming world looks ahead to Gamescom in August, fans of Starfield are hopeful that more details about the game’s future will be revealed soon. Until then, the promise of “exciting things” keeps the community engaged and eager for what comes next.
