Preliminary Autopsy Results Confirm Homicide in Melina Frattolin Case

In a tragic development, the preliminary results of Melina Frattolin’s autopsy have been released. While the final report is pending further laboratory testing, the findings indicate that the 9-year-old girl died from asphyxia due to drowning, and the manner of death has been classified as homicide. The autopsy was conducted by Dr. Michael Sikirica at Glens Falls Hospital on Monday, July 21, the same day law enforcement held a press conference announcing the arrest of Melina’s father, Luciano Frattolin, on charges of second-degree murder and concealment of a human corpse.

Luciano Frattolin was arraigned in Ticonderoga Town Court, where a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf. Authorities are now seeking public assistance in gathering additional evidence and eyewitness accounts related to the vehicle that Melina and her father traveled in from July 11 to July 19. Specifically, they are focusing on the area of I-87 Northway from Exit 28 (North Schroon Lake: US 9, NY 74 to Ticonderoga) through Exit 20 (Fort Ann, Queensbury, Lake George, NY 149 & US 9) during the evening of July 19.

Law enforcement provided photos of the vehicle, a 2024 gray Toyota Prius, driven by Frattolin. On Wednesday morning, police announced a heavy presence in the area due to the ongoing investigation. While there is no current threat to the public, drivers are advised to avoid the area. If travel is necessary, motorists are encouraged to remain alert and exercise caution.

Discovery of Melina’s Body and Initial Reports

Melina’s body was discovered under a log in the shallows of a pond in Ticonderoga (Essex County) on Sunday, July 20. This followed her father’s call to 911 the previous evening in the Lake George area (Warren County), where he reported her missing and possibly abducted. An Amber Alert was issued overnight on July 19 and was later canceled on the afternoon of July 20.

The inconsistencies in Frattolin’s statements about the events led to increased scrutiny. Initially, he claimed to have returned to the vehicle and found his daughter missing. Later, he changed his story, claiming to have seen two men forcing Melina into a white van. However, investigations found no evidence supporting his account of a suspicious white van or any signs of abduction.

Last Seen and Travel Details

Melina was last seen on video surveillance in a Saratoga Springs restaurant at approximately 5:30 p.m. and again at 6:30 p.m. on July 19. During this time, she spoke with her mother, showing no indication of distress or being in danger. Melina and her father, both Canadian residents, were on vacation in the United States, which they were authorized to do. They spent time in Connecticut and New York, including New York City, before planning to return to Montreal on Saturday, July 19, when Melina would be placed back in the custody of her mother.

It is important to note that Melina’s mother had no concerns for her daughter’s safety. Additionally, Luciano Frattolin has no criminal record or reports of domestic abuse in either Canada or the United States.

Ongoing Legal Proceedings

Luciano Frattolin is scheduled to appear in court again on Friday. His case continues to draw significant attention, with law enforcement working closely with the community to gather any additional information that may help clarify the circumstances surrounding Melina’s death.

As the investigation unfolds, authorities are urging anyone with relevant details to come forward. The case highlights the importance of community involvement in solving such tragic incidents and ensuring justice for the victim.
