Authorities Charge Suspect in Walmart Knife Attack with Terrorism and Assault

Overview of the Incident
A man accused of entering a Walmart in Michigan and randomly stabbing 11 shoppers has been detained by bystanders in the store’s parking lot. Authorities have indicated that he is expected to face terrorism and multiple assault charges. The incident occurred on Saturday, with calls coming in at 4:43 p.m., and a sheriff’s deputy arriving just three minutes later.
Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea mentioned that the motive behind the attack by Bradford Gille of Afton, Michigan, remains unclear. Gille, who has a history of assaultive incidents and controlled substance violations, was arrested and said very little during the process. He is expected to be charged with one count of terrorism and 11 counts of assault with intent to murder.
Quick Response from Law Enforcement and Bystanders
Shea praised the quick response from law enforcement officers, who arrived within three minutes after receiving the call about the stabbing. Additionally, a group of bystanders intervened and successfully detained Gille in the parking lot. The individual was taken into custody within one minute of the call, which Shea described as “remarkable” and likely prevented further harm.
“I cannot commend everyone that was involved enough,” Shea said at a press conference. “When you stop and look from the time of call to the time of actual custody, the individual was detained within one minute.”
Understanding the Terrorism Charge
The terrorism charge against Gille is based on the impact the attack had on the community rather than on a single individual. Grand Traverse County Prosecutor Noelle Moeggenberg explained that the attack was intended to instill fear in the entire community and potentially alter how people operate daily.
“It’s something that is done not to individual people, not to those individual victims — obviously they are most affected — but it is we believe in some ways done to affect the entire community, to put fear in the entire community and to change how maybe we operate on a daily basis,” Moeggenberg said.
Details About the Victims
Shea noted that the 11 victims were both men and women, ranging in age from 29 to 84, and included one Walmart employee. Munson Medical Center Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tom Schermerhorn stated that one patient was treated and released; two were in serious condition, and the rest were in fair condition. All were expected to survive.
Witness Accounts
Steven Carter, who was loading his truck in the Walmart parking lot, witnessed a man cut a woman’s throat with a knife. About five minutes later, the man was surrounded by shoppers, including someone holding a gun. The group of five or six people repeatedly told him to drop the knife, but he responded, “I don’t care, I don’t care.” He backed away before being tackled and subdued.
“At first, it was disbelief. I thought maybe it was like a terror attack,” said Carter, who delivers customer orders from Walmart. “And then it was fear, disbelief, shock. And that was, it was just amazing. And it all happened fast. Like he was totally subdued on the ground by the time police arrived.”
Tiffany DeFell, 36, who lives in Honor, about 25 miles from Traverse City, described the scene as chaotic and frightening. “It was really scary. Me and my sister were just freaking out,” she said. “This is something you see out of the movies. It’s not what you expect to see where you’re living.”
Additional Information
Shea mentioned that the weapon used appeared to be a folding-style knife, and the stabbing began near the checkout counter. He also stated that the victims were not predetermined.
Walmart issued a statement saying it would continue working closely with law enforcement in the investigation. The store’s associates will be paid while the store remains closed, and counseling services have been made available. It is not yet known when the store will reopen.
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino shared on social media that bureau officials were responding to provide any necessary support.
Traverse City, a popular vacation spot on the coast of Lake Michigan, is known for its cherry festival, wineries, and lighthouses. It is located about 25 miles east of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
