Kahlil Whitney's Return to the Big Blue Nation

Kahlil Whitney has made a powerful return to the Big Blue Nation, rekindling his connection with Kentucky basketball fans after an unexpected departure years ago. A five-star recruit in the 2019-20 season, Whitney left Lexington during that campaign to pursue professional opportunities. He only played 18 games for the Wildcats, averaging 3.3 points and starting eight contests—far from the impact expected of a top-tier recruit.

After five years away from the program, Whitney found his way back through La Familia, a team composed mostly of former UK players competing in The Basketball Tournament (TBT). His debut with the team was marked by a strong performance, scoring 14 points in his first game.

Whitney expressed gratitude for the warm reception he received from UK fans, stating, "It's amazing, they've welcomed me with open arms." He emphasized that the support from the fan base serves as motivation for him to continue proving himself on the court.

His commitment to the fans was evident during La Familia’s second-round matchup against War Ready. When a skirmish broke out between War Ready guard Wendell Green Jr. and the La Familia bench, Whitney took it upon himself to redirect the energy. Instead of focusing on the conflict, he encouraged fans to stand up, bringing the crowd to their feet and showing his appreciation for those who had supported him over the years.

In the thrilling 80-76 victory, Whitney contributed significantly. He finished with 10 points on 4-for-8 shooting, joining four other players in double figures. His most impactful moment came when he made a crucial defensive play. With War Ready needing a 3-pointer to win under TBT’s Elam ending rule, the team missed two shots but managed to grab rebounds each time. In a critical moment, Jomaru Brown lost possession, and Whitney dove to recover the ball, passing it to Archie Goodwin, who scored the game-winning basket.

Goodwin, who played alongside Whitney at UK, has been a standout performer in this TBT run. He led La Familia with 19 points in the first game and followed it up with 16 points, four rebounds, and six assists in the second game. Despite his success, Goodwin admitted he struggled with free throws, shooting just 2-for-9 in the latest game. However, he remains focused on making adjustments to improve his performance.

The game against War Ready was intense, with both teams struggling offensively. La Familia attempted 34 free throws, hitting only 53% of them, while committing 21 personal fouls. There were also seven technical fouls called between the two teams. Coach Sean Woods described the game as “chippy,” emphasizing the competitiveness between the squads.

La Familia’s journey in TBT has been anything but smooth. Their first-round game against Stroh’s Squad was a blowout, with a final score of 105-52. However, the team is now preparing for a tougher challenge as they advance to the final 16. They will host Eberlein Drive, Goodwin’s former team, at 6 p.m. EDT on Tuesday at Memorial Coliseum.

Goodwin, who knows many of the players on Eberlein Drive, believes the team will be well-prepared for the match. “I think we'll do a great job preparing for them, because I know they'll prepare for us well,” he said.

La Familia’s TBT journey has not only been about competition but also about redemption for some former UK players. Players like Willie Cauley-Stein have returned to Lexington, finding new love for the city. Ansley Almonor brings Pope era vibes to the team, while others have found their way back to the spotlight through the tournament.

As La Familia continues its TBT run, the focus remains on unity, resilience, and the shared passion for the game. For Kahlil Whitney, it’s a chance to reconnect with the Big Blue Nation and prove that his journey is far from over.
