A Nostalgic Return to the "Sex and the City" Universe

Fans of Sex and the City were in for a treat when one of the show’s most beloved figures made a surprise appearance in the latest episode of And Just Like That. The return of Andy Cohen, Sarah Jessica Parker’s real-life best friend, brought back a familiar face from the original series, sparking excitement among fans.

Cohen, known for his role as the host of Watch What Happens Live, made a brief cameo in the new season, playing a Bergdorf Goodman employee named Daniel. While his appearance was short, it marked a significant moment for fans who have followed his journey from the original series to the modern revival.

The scene itself was simple: Carrie Bradshaw, played by Parker, enters Bergdorf’s after a disagreement with her boyfriend Aidan. As she walks through the store, she encounters Daniel, who offers assistance. However, what seemed like a straightforward scene turned out to be quite challenging for Cohen during filming.

Cohen shared on his SiriusXM radio show, Andy Cohen Live, that he struggled to get the line just right. The original script had him say, “Oh hey, Carrie, I’ll be with you in a sec.” But after several attempts, the line was adjusted to, “Hey, Carrie, I’m slammed, I’ll be with you in a minute.” This change, however, led to an unexpected outcome—Cohen delivered the line with too much intensity.

“I was marching out like, ‘Carrie, I am slammed! I’m gonna be with you in a minute!’” he recalled, emphasizing his performance. His over-the-top delivery caught the attention of series creator Michael Patrick King, who quickly reminded him that the scene was pivotal for Carrie.

King reportedly told Cohen, “You’re stealing focus from Carrie. The episode title should now be called ‘Daniel’s Busiest Day.’ And it’s not about ‘Daniel’s Busiest Day,’ keep it on Carrie!” Parker also chimed in, offering specific advice on how to deliver the line properly. Cohen admitted that he was a “disaster” during the initial takes, but the situation turned into a humorous moment for everyone involved.

Despite the challenges, the final version of the scene was well-received. Cohen joked that it was “the best they could get,” highlighting the collaborative nature of the process.

This return to the Sex and the City universe wasn’t the first time Cohen appeared in the show. He previously played a shoe salesman during the sixth season of the original series. Entertainment Weekly confirmed that this character is indeed a younger version of Daniel, who was still referred to as just a salesperson rather than being on a first-name basis with Carrie.

Cohen’s presence in the show has a long history. In 2018, he shared a screenshot on Instagram of his SATC debut, writing, “You may know that I was a Barney’s shoe salesman in the last season of #SATC but were you aware I appeared in Season 4 (I think) shirtless in a gay bar standing next to Carrie Bradshaw?” The scene was cut from the TV version but can still be found on DVD.

There’s no official confirmation yet whether this shirtless man in the gay bar is the same character as Daniel, but Cohen humorously joked about the possibility on Instagram, thanking King for bringing back the “BELOVED character of ‘Barney’s Shoe Salesman’… who is now a Bergdorf’s Shoe salesman named DANIEL!”

From a shoe salesman at Barney’s to a Bergdorf Goodman employee named Daniel, Cohen’s character has certainly come a long way. His return to the Sex and the City universe is a nostalgic reminder of the show’s enduring legacy and the deep connections between its cast and crew.
