A Centenarian's Journey of Joy, Service, and Inspiration

In a world where many people slow down as they age, Alice Breon is living proof that life can be vibrant, meaningful, and full of purpose at any stage. Celebrating her 100th birthday in Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, Breon has become a symbol of resilience, positivity, and the power of community. Her story is one of remarkable experiences, heartfelt connections, and a deep commitment to living life to the fullest.

The celebration took place at Saint John’s United Church of Christ, a place that has been central to Breon’s life for decades. On a warm Friday afternoon, dozens of friends, family members, and churchgoers gathered to honor her milestone. The church hall was filled with laughter, photographs, and heartfelt messages, all highlighting the impact she has had on those around her.

“I’ve enjoyed life to the fullest,” Breon shared during the event. “And I implore people to just enjoy the life they have.” Her words resonated with everyone present, reminding them of the importance of savoring every moment.

Breon is not only a long-time member of the congregation but also a vital part of its spiritual family. Church member John Poorman, who helped chauffeur her to the party, spoke about her contributions. “She played the snare drum and cymbal in our praise band. She’s an author, a very influential person because she speaks to us from the heart.”

Her influence extends beyond the church walls. Breon is the author of two books, including her first titled Green Gravy, Monster Bread and Other Stories. When asked about advice for aspiring writers, she emphasized authenticity. “Write what you know about, what you have experienced. Don’t make up things,” she said. “You have the idea, and you know you want to get it across. The main thing is to be succinct enough to show what you’re trying to say.”

Much of her writing stems from her personal experiences, particularly her time living in Japan with her husband after World War II. “My husband was in the Air Force,” she explained. “We lived in Maine, Texas, and over in Japan. I enjoyed my time in Japan... I really got to know the people and their customs. I studied Japanese dancing and other things with their culture. It was fascinating to me, so different from anything else I had ever experienced.”

Church member Beth Segall first met Breon nearly two decades ago. She described her as a joyful and positive presence. “She and her husband Woody were like this cute older couple that came [to church]. I mean, they were just so warm.” Segall was particularly impressed by Breon’s energy and spirit. “She’s 100 and she’s still so active. She was driving last week. But more than that, we have a very giving church, and Alice has been a big part of that spirit. She’s the kind of person who makes a place better just by being in it.”

Saint John’s United Church of Christ, known for its progressive and inclusive values, has always emphasized community, compassion, and service—qualities that Breon embodies. “Alice is sunshine on a cloudy day,” Poorman said. “She enhances our lives as a church.”

When asked about the most important moments of her life, Breon focused on relationships rather than achievements. “I think the people that I’ve met during those years have helped shape my life,” she said. “I’ve met a lot of very interesting people.”

As the celebration continued, guests shared stories, hugged Breon, and reflected on the impact she has had on their lives. One guest after another approached her with warm memories, each one adding to the rich tapestry of her life.

“I don’t know if I’ve influenced people,” Breon said humbly. “But they’ve influenced me. They’re a nice group.”

At 100, Breon shows no signs of slowing down. Her message to younger generations is simple: “Just enjoy every minute,” she said, smiling. “Every minute is a special minute.”

With friends like Breon and a faith community like Saint John’s, it’s clear that the spirit of fellowship and joy is alive and well in Boalsburg.
